Times have clearly been better for The Vampire Diaries' Stefan (Paul Wesley), who was locked up by the doppleganger Silas.

Moving forward into season 5 of the program, executive producer Julie Plec told TV Guide that Silas has both death and a significant other on his mind, which he'll use as motivation to make his presence felt in Mystic Falls.

"He still wants to get free from what he calls 'this stinking 2,000-year-old immortal life. He still hopes to die, to cross over to the other side, and be with his true love. But, of course, things will change along the way," she said.

Although the details of how Silas will use Stefan's life is still uncertain, the EP did go on to say that his existence as a Salvatore does throw "a wrench in things" for brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev).

"He's causing the most trouble at the beginning of the season, for sure, but by no means is he the biggest villain," added Plec.

The CW's Vampire Diaries is scheduled to air its fifth season on Thursday, October 10. Its spin-off series, The Originals, will begin season 1 on Tuesday, October 15.
