Orlando Bloom's deft, eleven archer is making the transition from one Middle Earth trilogy to another, much to fans surprise.

The blond-haired, keen-eyed Legolas is shooting arrows all around Peter Jackson's latest film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug despite never actually appearing in JRR Tolkien's prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

However, Jackson drew on the larger mythos of the fantasy realm and gleaned information from Tolkien's Samarilian to piece together a richer history of Middle Earth prior to the War of the Ring. Legolas and his father, Thranduil (Lee Pace), fit nicely into the mix despite Bloom's original misgivings.

"I was a little concerned about how that would play out...for obvious reasons," Bloom told Jimmy Kimmel said on Jimmy Kimmel Live before the film's premiere on Monday night. "What we achieved with Lord of the Rings - what Peter achieved and everyone achieved - was so amazing. But Peter really understands this world, and I think he's got one eye on the fans and the Tolkien people and the people who are real fans of the movie, and he's also got one eye on making a successful, fantastic movie."

Considering the amount of CGI work that goes into the New Zealand-based production, Bloom is still in the dark as to what the final cut actually looks like.

"It's always a treat with Peter Jackson because the magic that he creates," Bloom explained. "You walk on set and do a few things and suddenly I'm hanging upside down with wires and stuff and thinking about, 'I wonder what this is going to turn out like.'"

Catch Bloom with Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, and Richard Armitage when The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hit theaters on Dec. 13.
