Diana DeGarmo was totally caught off guard last night when Ace Young proposed to her live on the American Idol stage. Ace Young, who was a contestant on AI Season 5, proposed to Diana, who also was an AI contestant - third runner up in the 3rd season of the show in 2004.

Young and Degarmo were seated next to each other, and Seacrest invited them onto the stage. The pair, who worked on Broadway together, had recently moved in together.

"We have conquered Broadway together, we have created new music together, we have an amazing group of people around us and," Young said to DeGarmo."I want to make this last forever..Diana.. will you marry me?"

DeGarmo was totally taken by surprise and became very tearful as she said "Yes!"

Although the pair did not compete in the same season of Idol, they met in the Broadway musical "Hair" in 2010.

"We were friends, first and foremost..We had both been through 'Idol,' which is such a unique and life-changing experience, and we just truly bonded," DeGarmo recently told Us magazine.

The surprise proposal could not have come without the help of American Idol, of course. It seems Young pulled it off by phoning show producer Nigel Lythgoe to plan the engagement, according to People. Young told People: "I called [producer] Nigel [Lythgoe] directly last week and said, 'I want to do this. I'm going to do this. Is there any way I could do it at the show?' He said 'Yes, I'm not going to tell anybody until the day of ... [and] I want you to figure it out with Ryan [Seacrest]."

DeGarmo is currently signed to her fiance's record label, Young Brothers Entertainment. They co-wrote her country ballad, "Good Goodbye" for The Young & The Restless. DeGarmo recently released EP "Live To Love", in which the couple recorded a duet, according to People.
