Next season of The Vampire Diaries will include an interesting love story between Stefan and Caroline. However, the romance won't really be a "two-way street."

Stefan To Go Through 'Character-Defining Journey' After Damon's Death?

"She's going to realize it's a little more one-sided than she was hoping, and there's going to be some fallout from that," executive producer Caroline Dries told TVLine.com in a new interview. "But just because one character doesn't like another character, that doesn't mean it's not a fascinating love story."

Dries previously divulged some more information about their relationship to Alloy Entertainment. She explained that the situation isn't simple because of Elena and Stefan's past, which has forced Caroline to take a step back. The whole situation has made Caroline a little unsure of her own feelings.

Alaric Returns For Season 6 & Shares 'Grief' With Elena?

"Her feelings for Stefan are (at the conscious level right now) friend feelings. I personally feel like she's not quite sure what she's feeling. It's all types of confusing," Dries said. "The feelings behind the feelings are something we get to explore in season 6 as we watch how her relationship with Stefan plays out in the wake of the finale."

TVGuide.com also recently confirmed that Stefan won't be anywhere near Mystical Falls when the new season premieres. "In fact, he will have taken up a surprising new profession in his new 'home,'" the website noted.

Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries premieres on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 8/7c on The CW.
