The season 5 finale of The Vampire Diaries was difficult for Stefan, who lost his brother Damon.

Damon Dies On TVD Finale & Fans React

While some may think that having Caroline is enough for Stefan, the CW show's executive producer explained that it won't be enough to fill the void.

"It's really a character-defining journey for [Stefan], and it'll change him quite a lot," Julie Plec told TVGuide.com. "At what point does he decide to give up or keep searching for answers?"

Plec previously spoke about how the other characters will handle the loss of both Damon and Bonnie as The Other Side is destroyed, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"I think the most important thing I can say about season 6 is our characters fundamentally have to come to terms with the fact that Damon and Bonnie are gone forever, and have been doing so for quite some time when we return," she said.

"Some are in denial, some are still searching for answers. 'They've got to be somewhere. Where are they? We've got to rescue them.' Some have given up completely. Each individual character's reaction to the loss of these two people will be what informs the beginning of the sixth season."

It's also been confirmed that Damon and Bonnie will appear next season. However, it's unclear in what capacity. This leaves many questions for Damon's relationship with Elena.

"I mean, there's a million different ways that you can do that," Plec also told EW. "But as far as in what context - how, why, and where? - that's part of the mystery."
