Ryan Lanza Called Newton Shooter; Adam Lanza Maybe Carried Brother's ID
In an effort to get out quick reports on Dec. 14 about the Newton, Conn., school shooting, media reports erroneously said Ryan Lanza was the shooter and created an Internet buzz instantly when in reality it was his brother Adam who was responsible for the attack.
For hours on Friday, the shooter was identified as Ryan, with his age alternatively reported as 24 or 20, according to The Associated Press.
Ryan works at Ernest & Young in New York City's Time Square area. A co-worker who spoke to MailOnline on condition of anonymity said while at work on Friday, Ryan saw TV reports that he had killed 30 people at an elementary school in Connecticut. When he realized he might have been mixed up with his brother, he told his boss "I need to go" and walked out of the office. He was later taken into police custody for questioning in Hoboken, N.J. with his father Peter.
The confusion was explainable when a person who had spoken with Ryan said that 20-year-old Adam could have been carrying identification belonging to his 24-year-old sibling.
But before the mix up was addressed and cleared, Ryan took to his Facebook page and continuously declared "It wasn't me."
"It wasn't me I was at work it wasn't me," he wrote, two minutes later followed by "I'm on the bus home now it wasn't me."
Both father and son have since been released from police custody.
On Friday morning, Dec. 14, Adam shot and killed his mother Nancy, his first victim that day, in the home they shared before making his way to Sandy Hooks Elementary School. He broke into the building carrying three weapons all legally registered to his mother, who enjoyed target shooting as a hobby, and reportedly killed 20 children and six adults before killing himself. His body was found in one of the school's classrooms.
