'Grey's Anatomy' Season 9 Spoilers: Meredith/Derek & Cristina/Owen Relationship News
Viewers of "Grey's Anatomy" season 9 saw on Jan. 24 Derek Shepard get back into the operating room following his hand surgery and Meredith Grey overcome her fear of flying, but what about the couple's personal life and the baby they are expecting together?
Grey was adament in the past about getting excited that she is pregnant, considering her history with miscarrying. Now that she has embraced her pregancy and told the Seattle Grace doctors about it, the question remains whether everything will run smoothly for the rest of the season.
TVLine spoke to the show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, who reassured fans that there is a "lovely storyline planned" for Grey, Shepard and their family (they already have an adopted daughter).
"Everybody thinks I kill everybody all the time" Rhimes said. "But in my mind I feel like we have this storyline about this person who wasn't necessarily meant to get pregnant, but did - and is now very worried for herself. We're going to be watching this. We have a lovely storyline planned, and I think it's going to be very beautiful for Meredith and Derek."
Rhimes also noted that Shepard feels more and more responsible for "what's happening with the hospital" regarding the lawsuit, and that both he and Grey are "going to be playing a larger part in the future of the hospital."
Rhimes also revealed that Cristina Yang and Owen Hunt will resurface their own baby issues. Hunt is placed in a situation where he has the woman he loves who is brilliant in the career she has, but who is someone that does not want a family.
Rhimes noted "it is going to come up" and when it does, it is going to be complex in the sense that it puts a whole new meaning on Yang and Owen's relationship.
"There's something very intense about the idea that Cristina is a woman who does not want children. She's unapologetic about it. She does not want them," Rhimes said. "I feel really strongly that we allow this character to be who she is, this woman that does not want children. She's a surgeon and a scientist first before she is anything else.
"They're going to have to really talk talk about it and figure it out and struggle to figure out if they can be in love despite the fact that he wants kids and she doesn't."
Watch "Grey's Anatomy" Thursday nights on ABC at 9 p.m. ET.
