The Leftovers achieved its highest ratings of the season for Sunday night's season 2 finale, giving hope to fans hoping to see it renewed for season 3.

Is HBO Going To Cancel Or Renew 'The Leftovers'?

This season of The Leftovers has had a huge increase in critical acclaim compared to season 1, but ratings have unfortunately been down. Luckily, the show saw an increase for the season 2 finale Sunday, scoring 993,000 live and same day viewers, according to Nielsen ratings via Headline Planet. It scored a 0.48 in the adults 18-49 demo.

This is the highest episode viewership of the season, and it could not have come at a better time for The Leftovers. The series was never able to cross the 1-million-viewer mark, despite season 1 having no episode below 1.38 million viewers. Of course, some may chalk this up to not having the strong True Blood lead-in it had last year, plus it faced steep competition with other adult dramas in the Sundays at 9 p.m. timeslot like AMC's The Walking Dead and Showtime's Homeland.

Last week's episode was a season high for The Leftovers and the finale built on these ratings, which could spell good news for fans. HBO has yet to renew the series for a third season, despite fan efforts.

Diehard fans stood outside HBO headquarters in New York City yesterday, dressed as the Guilty Remnant, a.k.a. the ominous cult from the series that wears all white, smokes cigarettes and remains totally silent.

There is still no word on if HBO will renew or cancel The Leftovers.
