More than 640,000 students in the Los Angeles Area are being kept home from school today after the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District made a decision to close all of the schools following what is being referred to as a "credible" terror threat.

Details behind the closure are scarce, though it has been reported that an electronic threat was issued to a board member which threatened the safety of many of the district's schools.

"It was many schools, not specifically identified," school superintendent Ramon Cortines said during a press conference on Tuesday. "I am not taking the chance to bring children into any part of the building until I know it is safe."

Cortines cited recent terror attacks by ISIS in Paris last month, and a recent attack in nearby San Bernardino as well as a reason for the overabundance of caution.

It is also notable that the threat came just two days after the two year anniversary of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The district, the second largest in the country, is comprised of more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools, according to the district's website.

Many have taken to Twitter to discuss the situation, with most seeming to believe the situation involved a bomb threat, though many expressed that the school may have been too cautious since terror groups often don't give warnings before attacking.
