'Grey's Anatomy' Season 9 Spoilers, Episode 14 VIDEO: Alex & Jackson Compete for Seattle Grace
With Cristina Yang taking herself out of the running, Alex Karev and Jackson Avery compete against each other to be the new face of Seattle Grace-Mercy West.
In a promotional video for Episode 14 airing on Feb. 7, titled The Face of Change, interns for both of the doctors discuss who they think will win. Jo then tells Karev that he will get support and likely win because of his Africa project, which will soften many to vote in his favor.
"You have Africa. Led with Africa," she tells him.
Then to boost the confidence of Avery, his intern tells him, "he's a scapper and a fighter and some people find that charming. But you are an Avery. Use it."
The two men admit at one point to Meredith Grey that they are competing to be the "poster boy" for the hospital's new brochure, with Karev telling Avery "bite me pretty boy." When Grey asked why there were no women in the running, Yang said there was but she turned them down - "this face only goes on the Nobel brochure."
The competition gets interesting when Karev and Avery work together on a transgender teen couple. The show's creator, Shonda Rhimes, told TV Guide that episode 14 will be "Alex-centric" and that viewers will see him go to great lengths to keep the hospital open.
"It's really about the idea that they're trying to rebrand the hospital in a certain way," Rhimes said. "So they're reluctantly fighting to be the face of the hospital, or the cover boy for the hospital, in a way that's very funny and very challenging."
She also said that though Karev's competition with Avery will be highlighted in the episode, viewers will also see the extent of the financial troubles Seattle Grace faces.
"You begin to realize how much trouble they really are in at the hospital, so you're watching things fall apart from that perspective," Rhimes said.
