Sons of Anarchy fans desperate to return to the show's universe just got a dose of good news.

FX is reportedly moving forward with a spinoff to Sons of Anarchy centered on the Mayan Motorcycle Club. The possible series is being developed by Sons of Anarchy showrunner Kurt Sutter as well as Elgin James, who wrote and directed the 2011 movie Little Birds.

This news was revealed in a new Deadline report which says that according to FX, the spinoff, titled Mayans MC, is "in the spirit of Sons of Anarchy," and will be a "dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens."

"I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice," Sutter said, of producing the show alongside James. "Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice."

This is a return to the Sons of Anarchy universe for Sutter after going in an entirely different direction with his follow-up series, The Bastard Executioner. That show, which was set in medieval times, was cancelled after one season by FX.

It remains to be seen if any of the Mayans that appeared in Sons of Anarchy, such as Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera) will return for Mayans MC.

They are now in the formal script development stage of pre-production. Considering this, fans shouldn't expect the series anytime soon. Deadline reports that James will be writing the pilot script, while both he and Sutter will produce the series itself.

The concept of a Mayan-themed spinoff to Sons of Anarchy has been floating around for months now, with Sutter delving into his plan for the series in a Deadline interview from September.

"It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of [Hispanic] culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand," Sutter said. "I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told. It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that ... My intent is, over the hiatus I'll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there."
