New photos from the set of the ultra-secret sixth season of American Horror Story have been revealed, leading many to speculate on the upcoming plot.

As American Horror Story fans desperately cling to any sense of what season 6 might be about, there is a new report that might reveal some interesting bits of info.

The report comes from TMZ, which features photos from the season 6 set. The photos include a glimpse of a colonial farm and a general feeling of older, farm life. But one photo in particular is causing some discussion.

The photo features a tree with the word "CROATOAN" carved into it. This has important historical significance, as this relates to Roanoke Island. Back in the 16th century, Roanoke Island - which would later become part of Dare County, N.C. - was home to a colony of over 100 people. Then, every single one of those colonists disappeared. To this day, what happened to this colony remains one of America's greatest unsolved mysteries.

While the sudden disappearance largely happened without a trace, there was one clue left behind: a tree with the word "CROATOAN" etched into it. This was the name of a Native tribe who lived in a nearby island, which was thought by some to be where the Roanoke people went. However, there are many legends that remain about this mystery.

It remains to be seen if this will be the main plot of season 6 of American Horror Story - like with the story of Madame LaLaurie in Coven or merely a side storyline, like Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley) in Freak Show. Either way, TMZ reports to have seen cast members wearing colonial garb, so it sounds like the new season could be set in the distant past. However, nothing has been confirmed by FX or any of the show's cast and producers.

With less than two months to go before the season 6 premiere, and these new set images, anticipation is at an all-time high.

American Horror Story season 6 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

This new trailer certainly has a creepy, colony feel, doesn't it?
