If you never want to get between a mama bear and her cubs, then you certainly don't want to keep Supernatural's Mary Winchester from her boys.

Mama Winchester just woke up from a 30-year dirt nap but her hunter (and maternal) instincts are as sharp as ever. Sam's (Jared Padalacki) life is on the line, and Mary (Samantha Smith) will be integral to tracking down her wayward son in the season 12 premiere.

"She actually has very strong hunter's instincts. Sam's been captured in the first episode [and] she sort of kicks into super drive," writer Robert Berens previewed. "We get to actually see what an incredible hunter she is."

Titled "Keep Calm and Carry On," the Oct. 13 episode will pick up right where the finale left off.

"Dean (Jensen Ackles) is overwhelmed as he comes face to face with his mom, Mary Winchester," The CW teased. "Meanwhile, Sam is fighting for his life after Toni, from the Woman of Letters, shot him."

It's a good thing Mary's around, too. Supernatural will get back to basics this fall, and a new sneak peek has Smith's character stepping through the darkness, EMF meter in hand. The monsters under your bed better watch out - Mary was raised in the family business, after all.

"It was really important for us to focus on what I call our meet and potatoes, strong, monster supernatural stories that we know we can put different twists on and really kind of dive into those because last season was so overcome with mythology and the angels and demons," showrunner Andrew Dabb explained. For the moment, heaven and hell will take a backseat to everything that goes bump in the night.
