Mike Darnell Fox: Programming Exec to Leave Fox; Brought On 'American Idol,' 'X Factor'
Mike Darnell, Fox's president of alternative programming, will leave the position this June according to the network.
Darnell started at Fox in 1994 as Director of Special, reports Deadline. After 18 years, his contributions to the station are numerous. Some of his more notable moves include taking on American Idol, X Factor, So You Think you Can Dance, and Futurama.
However, Darnell sates that his departure has nothing to do with the slipping American Idol ratings, according to The Wrap. Darnell's contract ends this June, and despite an offer from the network for renewal, the exec has decided to move on.
"I'm extremely grateful that Fox has offered me a new long-term contract (and anyone who knows me won't believe I'm saying this), but I've decided it's time for a change," Darnell said, according to Deadline. "With my current deal ending in June, and having been here for 18 years (kind of a record in Hollywood), I had to make a decision: either stay (and basically admit to myself I was going to retire at Fox ... not a terrible choice) or leave and try something new."
Darnell has reportedly turned to the WME agency as he looks for new work, probably in the producing field, reports The Wrap.
