'Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular' Will Not Air on CBS [VIDEO]
If you're clicking through your television channels in an effort to find the usual 10 p.m. showing of the Boston Pops annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, you're out of luck this year.
The celebration was pulled from its regular CBS slot after the network failed to renew another five-year contract with the organization. While the network failed to give a concrete reason for their decision, according to Streetwise, local organizers blame it on flagging ratings.
According to the programs executive producer David Mugar, ABC worked to push the Boston Pops off the schedule due to their success. Broadcasting the Macy's Fourth of July fireworks from New York, ABC used to only show their program at 9 p.m. However, several years ago the network began airing an encore performance at 10 p.m. in competition with Boston's performance.
"That's what happened with the July Fourth show," Mugar told The Boston Globe. "We were number one, Macy's could not tolerate that, and Macy's killed the Fourth of July on national television for Boston."
Last year the CBS program lost 1 million viewers, or nearly 15 to 2 percent of their viewership, according to The Boston Globe.
However, those who live in the Boston area and aren't able to make it out the event can view the Pops on the local CBS channel, WBZ-TV.
