Earlier today, Marvel released the trailer for its newest Disney+ series "Ms. Marvel." Not to be mistaken for "The Marvels," the upcoming film directed by Nia DaCosta that's the sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel" film, Ms. Marvel features tha Pakistani American teenager, Kamala Khan, as the titular superhero, making her the first Muslim superhero to headline a Marvel comic and now a Marvel television series.

Set to make a splash on the Disney+ streaming service on June 8, 2022, the series stars newcomer Iman Vellani as Khan, a superhero fan who constantly has her head in the clouds. Her favorite superhero is Carol Danvers, aka. Captain Marvel, and she day dreams about donning the blue and red costume and fighting crime. However, one day, she discovers she also possesses superpowers, causing her to challenge her own misconception that "it's not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world."

In the colorful trailer, Vellani shines as the superhero hopeful. Bright, chaotic graphics reminiscent of comic book effects help show how Khan literally thinks of everything through a superhero lens. Trippy dream sequences where Khan imagines herself in costume and snapping in between her daydreams and the real world and all her real world responsibilities really give the show a youthful, teenage flair. All this helps sell the feeling that Khan is a true superhero admirer and when the trailer finally asks Khan what she feels about being a superhero, it's answered with an emphatic, "Cosmic!"

All this is to say that you don't have to be a brown girl from Jersey City to emphasize with Khan and her journey to become Ms. Marvel. As a huge superhero fan myself and erstwhile teenager, I immediately identified with Khan and rooted for her to succeed. Vellani was cast after a long search and her character is set to appear with Brie Larson's Captain Marvel in "The Marvels." After seeing this trailer, I'm looking forward to seeing how she will take her place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside the heroes she loves so much.
