The nominees for the 2022 Tony Awards have been officially announced today, and, as is the case with every awards show, there are some plays that are being recognized in several categories.

It has been a banner year for Broadway. This is not only in reference to the supreme quality of plays and musicals that came out this year, but a celebratory recognition that, after the shutdown, the ghost-lights have been turned off and theatre was able to come back for a full season.

Every show that managed to come back after the pandemic is a winner already (and very much DOES enjoy the ever cheesy 'everyone-is-a-winner comment' we just made).

Through the list, however, there are some exceptional shows that have popped up in multiple categories that we should give some special recognition to.

Only one show this season secured more than ten nominations; the exciting new musical A Strange Loop appears an impressive eleven times on the list of nominations.

The show was nominated for:

  • Best Musical
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role of a Musical
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role of a Musical
  • Best Book of a Musical
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Scenic Design of a Musical
  • Best Lighting Design of a Musical
  • Best Sound Design of a Musical
  • Best Direction of a Musical,
  • and Best Orchestrations.

There were other musicals and plays which recieved impressive nominations numbers. MJ and Paradise Square both recieved ten nominations, the Broadway revival of Company recieved nine, and Six the Musical recieved eight. 

The Lehman Trilogy also recieved eight nominations, making it the most widely nominated play of the season. It is followed closesly by for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf which recieved seven.
