Grey's Anatomy returns to ABC in September with the super-storm that shook Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and the show's executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, talked to TV Guide about what season 10 will entail for some of the show's couples.

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek Shepard (Patrick Dempsey) will experience parenthood in a different way, after she gave birth to a girl in the season 9 finale. Even though she is already a mother to an adopted daughter, Zola, Rhimes said things will be different for Meredith now that she has given birth.

"They have a newborn, which is very different from adopting a 1-year-old child," Rhimes said about the married couple. "It's a very different idea to have a newborn who only sleeps two hours at a time, wakes up to be fed, and Meredith has to figure out how to breastfeed and all those other things. Also, having two children is very different from having one."

When asked if Meredith will step away from her duties as a doctor to focus more on her children, Rhimes replied, "We'll see her deal with what that choice means."

Another couple on the ABC series that will go through changes in season 10 is Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). They ended their relationship - once again - in the season 9 finale after realizing they have different desires when it comes to wanting children. They still have feelings for each other in season 10 and will try to face those emotions to see where it takes them, Rhimes said.

"We're going to watch them grapple with what it means to have broken up at the end of the season and what that means for their future," she added about the on-and-off couple. "For both of them, the hard part is that they love each other. They want very, very different things, but they love each other. If only she'd want to have babies, or if only he'd give up wanting kids, they'd be fine."

Rhimes also talked about the infidelity that put a strain of Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robbins' (Jessica Capshaw) marriage. Arizona had an affair with a doctor visiting the hospital and after Callie found out they had a heated argument ending season 9, leaving fans wondering where they stand in their relationship. The couple will face the issues head on, Rhimes said, but it may be more difficult for Callie, since George (T.R. Knight) cheated on her seasons ago.

"It's not how she's handling it differently, but it's more, 'How does the fact that she's been cheated on before influence how she feels now? What is that going to mean for her?' " Rhimes asked. "These characters have some very complex things to go through. I'm excited to see what this means for them."

Grey's Anatomy returns with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9/8c on ABC.
