The Tomorrow People is starting to dig deeper into the story of the next breed of humans and their battle against those who seek to destroy them.

As the CW program moves into its third episode, "Girl, Interrupted," Stephen Jameson (Robbie Amell) will still be struggling to understand his place amongst the gifted underground and Ultra while Cara (Peyton List) finds herself within the walls of the agency that wants to kill her.

Stephen will butt heads with John (Luke Mitchell) while they attempt to rescue the latter's girlfriend. Mitchell recently discussed his character's and Cara's difficult relationship with Just Jared Jr.

"It's strange because it has the weight of responsibility on it, the responsibility of looking out for their species and having this agenda," Mitchell explained. "They're not just a regular couple with a regular life going, 'Yeah, let's go out to the movies' or 'Let's go have some us time.' There's never really us time. It's fighting bad guys. It's strange and weighted, but full of love. They care about each other deeply and it's kind of a tumultuous journey for them. You start to see different colors in each of those characters that are infused into their relationship. And then obviously, the complexity of adding Stephen in the mix, who not only has a link to Cara, but who's also a good-looking young man."

As the series unfolds, viewers will learn more about John, Cara's past, and Stephen's father.

"It feels like it's just getting bigger and more grounded, which allows us to go in any direction we want," Mitchell said. "It's really cool. I'm really enjoying the way the story is growing and developing."

The Tomorrow People airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on the CW.
