The dead will not stay dead in season 2 of The Following.

Murderer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) was confirmed dead in The Following's season 1 finale but viewers have not seen the last of him. Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is the FBI agent responsible for ending Joe's killing spree and is out for revenge in a new promo for season 2 of the Fox series, which also seems to confirm the death of a major character.

"Catching Joe Carroll cost me everything and everyone," Ryan says in the promo. "Now we all want to believe he's dead, but I say he's out there. I'm going to find him and I want revenge."

The "everyone" mainly refers to Ryan's longtime love -- and Joe's ex-wife -- Claire (Natalie Zea). The season 1 finale ended with Ryan and Claire fighting for their lives after being stabbed by one of Joe's followers.

Coming on to the season 2 cast as a series regular is 90210 star Jessica Stroup playing Ryan's cop niece, while Gladiator's Connie Nielsen will play a new love interest for the detective named Lily, according to E! Online. Dexter's Sam Underwood will also be added to the cast as a new troublemaker and Homeland's Valerie Cruz will play as NYPD detective Gina Mendez. True Blood's Carrie Preston will guest star as Joe Carroll's most devoted groupie.

At a panel discussion on Oct. 13, the show's cast said season 2 will be more "fun," "cool" & "terrifying." Bacon said his character Ryan will always have a "darker side" and actor Shawn Ashmore said about the lead detective, "There's definitely room to grow between Mike and Ryan."

Season two will pick up a year after the events of the finale, with the FBI asking Ryan and Weston (Shawn Ashmore) to help them solve a new murder spree, which Lily (Nielsen) is the lone survivor of. The individuals the FBI puts them in contact with leads Ryan to believe Joe is still alive.

The Following returns in January on Fox. The first episode of season 2 is titled Resurrection.
