The Bones season 9 finale will have a cliffhanger according to one of the show's executive producers, indicating that a season 10 is likely to occur.

Bones executive producer Stephen Nathan spoke with TVLine about the upcoming cliffhanger that will change the direction of the series.

"We're going out on a pretty big cliffhanger at the end of this [ninth] season," Nathan explained. "It will change, at least temporarily, the landscape of the show. It really will be a very big shift in how Booth and Brennan will be dealing with crimes in the future."

Based on Nathan's comments, it seems that the Bones team is confident that a season 10 will be coming, though Fox has not yet decided on whether or not to renew the show. Ever since the show moved to Fridays, though, it has regularly won its timeslot against competition from CBS, NBC and ABC, which will likely ensure a renewal

"I'm thrilled with the numbers on Friday," Nathan admitted. "It's the first time in years that [Fox has] won that hour."

Even if Fox decides to cancel the long-running show, Nathan ensured that they have a "contingency plan" in the works that will turn the season finale into a satisfying series finale.

If the hypothetical series finale does not satisfy fans, Nathan joked, "Everybody can come over to my house and we'll do a 10th season in the living room."
