Along with figure skating and luge, biathlon is the third Winter Olympic sport, in which both men and women compete jointly.

The intense sport combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.

During Wednesday's competition, the women must first ski three 2-kilometer loops before they head to the shooting range twice. The men are then expected to ski through three loops that are 2.5 kilometers in length. They also have two shooting rounds.

Athletes are permitted to reload three times maximum, but for every missed target they must ski an additional loop of 150 meters.

Countries competing are the Czech Republic, Norway, Ukraine, Italy, France, Russia, Germany, Belarus, Austria, Canada, U.S., Slovakia, Switzerland, Poland, Kazakhstan and Estonia.

Martin Fourcade of France dominated the men's individual competition on Feb. 13 while Darya Domracheva of Belarus got first place for the women on Feb. 14.
