The creators of Penny Dreadful have often spoke of their dedication to accurately recreating Frankenstein's misunderstood "creature" from the classic novel, and with there success of the character on the Showtime series, it is likely more literary characters are to come.

Uncertain Future For Dorian Gray On Showtime's 'Penny Dreadful'

Rory Kinnear (Quantum of Solace, Skyfall) was creator John Logan's only choice for the role of Creature on Penny Dreadful. He believed Kinnear possessed both the tenderness and brutality to bring forth the role. This casting decision has proven to be a wise choice, for Kinnear has received a fair amount of praise for the role.

'Penny Dreadful' Season Finale Spoilers

TV Line honored the 36-year-old British actor with "Performer Of The Week" for his performance in the series' first season finale, Grand Guignol, which aired June 29th.

With Kinnear's success and the closing of the first season, speculation has begun to mount as to which literary characters will be drawn into this dark, Victorian drama when it returns next year. One source suggested a few public domain characters, including H.P. Lovecraft's Randolph Carter, an occult investigator and the old creature of London mythology, Spring Heeled Jack.

Some real-life figures were also recommended, including the famed inventor Nikola Tesla, a fictional version of which had already appeared in the 2006 film The Prestige. The Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory was also mentioned. Bathory is known as a female counterpart to Vlad The Impaled, on whom Dracula is based. The Countess murdered her servants so that she could bathe in their blood, believing that it preserved her youth.

With a vivid collection of literary and historical figures at the series' disposal, anything could happen when season two rolls around.

Penny Dreadful is scheduled to return to Showtime in 2015.
