Renowned fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger looked quite dapper as he donned shades and a gray suit on Sept. 6 during Macy's Fashion's Night Out in New York City.

But to Hilfiger, 61, the beauty of fashion is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. When it comes to personal style, Hilfiger believes fearlessness is the No. 1"Do."

"I think people should not be afraid of whatever they want to do," he said after posing for photographers on the red carpet. "I think sometimes the fear keeps them from having fun and fashion should be fun."

Whether people wear his brands or not, he enjoys when they wear eye-popping apparel - the more colors, the merrier.

"I'm liking color, I like skinny jeans in color and I like an eclectic mix," he said. "I put a lot of color out and I hope people do whatever they want with it. I think that's a good idea."

Hilfiger values self-expression and staying true to one's self.

He considers the biggest fashion faux pas to be "[w]hen people really try too hard: they wear too much jewelry, too much makeup. They try overdoing it."

What's a product Hilfiger wishes everyone would do away with?

"I like everything except self-tanning. I like natural."

He joked that he was fond of that "(brown) spray that people have for their bald spots."

Many people look to Hilfiger for style inspiration, but who are his fashion icons?

"James Dean and Grace Kelly."
