The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards are almost here and the competition is fierce in the drama department.

The beloved 1960's advertising show "Mad Men" is a strong contender as the AMC production is looking to take their fifth consecutive win for best drama series. The show holds 17 Emmy nominations, which is just above the 16 held by their top competitor, "Downton Abbey." The PBS period drama set in an aristocratic English house has given the broadcast company its best years at the award show.

Todd Gold, executive editor of Xfinity TV, told Reuters, "What makes this year's Emmys filled with such anticipation is that there are no easy predictions and that makes the show exciting." He added, "There was a period in the 1990s when the Emmys seemed so predictable. This is a year that really reflects the strength and depth of TV across the board."

There's also the Showtime newcomer "Homeland," which rounds out the best drama series top choices. The show revolves around Claire Danes as a bipolar CIA agent trying to track down a returning U.S. Iraq war hero that's been turned by Muslim extremists. The series has received rave reviews and will be up for nine nominations this Sunday.

Although the buzz has centered on the top three dramas, other critically acclaimed series such as the dark drug drama "Breaking Bad" and the 1930s-era gangster show "Boardwalk Empire," have put up quite a fight. Bryan Cranston is favored to win a fourth Emmy as best actor in a dramatic series for his role in the final season of AMC's "Breaking Bad."

It's sure to be a dramatic event with questions still to be answered. Will the countesses and kitchen maids of Britain's import upstage the suits of "Mad Men"? Or will the psychological thriller "Homeland" come in and take the lead against the two?

Watch the results as the award show airs on ABC today at 7 p.m. Eastern Time and 4 p.m. Pacific Time.
