Lily Rabe has been a real chameleon on FX's American Horror Story, slipping into a variety of complex roles, but which character is her best ever?

Which of Sarah Paulson's 'American Horror Story' Characters Is Best?

Rabe has turned into a fan favorite actress through the course of American Horror Story. Originally playing the tragic wife Nora Montgomery in Murder House, she returned for Asylum with the juicy role of Sister Mary Eunice and followed that up with the witchy Misty Day in Coven. She would return to Freak Show for one episode as Sister Mary Eunice.

While there is no indication that Rabe will be back for season 5, subtitled Hotel, it is clear that she has made her mark on the show with memorable characters. Which one is your favorite?

Taissa Farmiga 'Hopeful' About Returning To 'American Horror Story'?

Nora Montgomery

Murder House (Season 1)

Rabe's debut performance on American Horror Story was not talked about much compared to her costars, but she established herself as a key player. Nora Montgomery was the wife of famed doctor Charles Montgomery, surgeon to the stars. She lived in the murder house as a ghost, haunting present and future residents. Nora also had a very complicated relationship with children.

Sister Mary Eunice McKee

Asylum (Season 2) and Freak Show (Season 4)

Her first starring role in the series, Rabe returned to Asylum as the sweetly innocent and naive nun Sister Mary Eunice. She had interesting relationships with Sister Jude (Jessica Lange) and Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell). Early on in the season she became possessed by a demon, drastically changing her personality and behavior. Sister Mary Eunice ultimately met a tragic end as she was thrown a full story in the asylum. Rabe would later return to the role pre-possession for Freak Show, where she admitted Pepper (Naomi Grossman) into the asylum.

Misty Day

Coven (Season 3)

Another fascinating character, Rabe played the swampy witch Misty Day in Coven. Misty Day was obsessed with Stevie Nicks and modeled herself after her. She was able to use her witchy powers to resurrect people from the dead. She stumbled upon the witches at Miss Robichaux's Academy where she attempted to prove herself as the next Supreme witch. Misty received a sad ending to her story when she became trapped in Hell and was forced to relive the same traumatizing school memory over and over.

Rabe brought something different to all of these roles, creating complex, original characters. She is set to star in a new ABC series called The Whispers so it is unknown if she will ever return to American Horror Story again.
