Robin Lord Taylor Previews Penguin's 'Final Assertion' on 'Gotham'

With the return of Gotham Monday night, McKenzie did a Reddit AMA on Monday and answered many juicy questions about the Fox series. With the series being such a big hub for the great Batman villains, he was asked which of them is his favorite.

"It's so hard to choose," he replied. "I love what Robin [Lord Taylor] and Cory [Michael Smith] are doing with Penguin and Nygma, so they are probably my favs! Plus, sweet guys to boot!"

'Gotham' Star Ben McKenzie Talks If Jerome Will Turn Into The Joker

Fans have yet to see Nygma's full transformation into the Riddler yet, but Taylor's performance as Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin has been a fan favorite from the start.

McKenzie added that he likes his role as Jim Gordon because "he's an old-fashioned hero in an age of anti-heroes. A throwback."

With the actor inhabiting the role in an already established universe, McKenzie admitted that there is more "responsibility" in getting things right while also doing their own thing, as opposed to just creating a unique world.

"It requires some ingenuity and bravery to shape the world as we see fit and not become slavishly devoted to one particular interpretation of the mythology," he said.

One question that may have been on several fans' minds is why Gotham takes so many breaks in between new episodes. While this is usually due to the network wanting to spread the show out from September to May, McKenzie said it is due to the amount of post-production work needed to create the show.

"It takes a long time to do post-production on a show like this," he explained. "Viz effects, editing, color timing, ADR, etc. We needed time to catch up to the airing schedule."

There are now only three episodes left of Gotham this season but luckily for fans, the show was renewed for a second season, which will likely begin airing in the fall.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
