Months after Giuliana made an allegedly racist comment about the dread lock hairstyle of actress Zendaya Coleman, her husband has come to her defense, claiming his wife's words were taken out of context.

"It was tough," Bill admitted to Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on Monday's episode of the TODAY show. "I was really surprised with how it happened," he continued. "Because, you know, her intent was to make a hippie joke. It had nothing to do with what some of these people were saying. And boy, it just took on a life of its own."

While Giuliana immediately went on record, apologizing for her comment, which came as a major diss to many, the controversy has lived on for weeks, and ultimately led her co-host, Kelly Osbourne, to quit the series.

Following the outrage, Bill claims he and Giuliana made a pact with one another, and have become stronger in the face of hardships.

"We made a plan. We were gonna just kinda weather it," he said. "We've got a strong marriage. We love each other. And we knew that she didn't do anything wrong. And obviously these situations bring us closer together. They can either tear you apart or bring you closer together, and we're a team."

"As a husband, we are the defender, we want to protect our family," Bill continued. "And I just kinda had to be muzzled. I wanted to get out there and I wanted to defend my wife."
