Fresh Express Incorporated issued a voluntary, precautionary recall of limited quantities of their spinach packages due to a possible health risk of salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday.

Fresh Express Spinach with a Use-by Date of November 7 and Product Code of S299B25 have been recalled the customers who have the above products are urged to throw away the products or contact Fresh Express for a full refund. The recalled items were distributed primarily in the western region of the U.S., the FDA noted. Retailers have been notified to remove the products from their store shelves and inventories.

The cautionary recall was administered due to "an isolated instance in which a random sample yielded a positive result for salmonella under U.S. Department of Agriculture's random sample testing program," according to the FDA.

Fresh Express noted that as of Wednesday, when the recall was first issued, they have received no consumer complaints or reports of salmonella poisoning in association with the recall.

If customers have questions or would like to receive a refund, they should the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT.

At time of publication, the recall was not mentioned on Fresh Express' official site. The company produces nearly 40 million pounds of salad each month and over 20 million servings of their salads are consumed every week, according to their site.

If present in food, salmonella does not usually affect the taste, smell or appearance of the item, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service. They defined salmonella as "microscopic living creatures that pass from the feces of people or animals to other people or other animals."

It can cause severe diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps within 8 to 72 hours after the infected food was eaten. Additional symptoms can include headache, nausea and vomiting, according to the FSIS.
