The alleged extramarital affair between CIA Director David Petraeus and his biographer American writer Paula Broadwell uncovered this week, has brought the spotlight into their families.

Petraeus confessed to cheating on his wife of 37 years Holly on Friday as he resigned from the CIA. The couple have two children.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours," he wrote.

Petraeus was appointed CIA Director by President Barack Obama in 2011. He helped lead the U.S. in the war against Iraq after the September 11 attacks.

The woman with whom Petraeus reportedly had the affair is Broadwell, according to Congressional and White House officials, report the New York Times and AP.

Broadwell is married to radiologist Scott Broadwell with whom she has two young sons, Lucien and Landon, and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, UK's Daily Mail reports. (See Paula and Scott Appear On the Daily Show Below)

The affair was uncovered by the FBI when they were investigating a separate issue described as a "potential criminal matter" that was not focused on Petraeus, according to the New York Times.

The FBI was investigating whether a computer used by Petraeus had been compromised in the criminal matter and that's when they found evidence of an extramarital affair.

Broadwell co-wrote the biography "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus" which was released earlier this year.

She was embedded with Petraeus in Afghanistan from July 2010 to July 2011 and was "afforded extensive access by General Petraeus, his mentors, his subordinates, and his longtime friends," according to a biography on her website.

The FBI is conducting an ongoing investigation into Broadwell for improperly trying to access his email, officials told NBC News. However the officials don't believe the investigation will end in criminal charges against her.
