42 Years In A Coma: Woman Dies At Age 59
A Miami resident who spent 42 years in a coma died Wednesday at the age of 59.
Edwarda O'Bara was a high school student in 1970 when she got sick, threw up her medicine and slipped into a diabetic coma, according to The Miami Herald.
On Wednesday morning, her sister Colleen said she went to get her coffee, came back her sister's room and gave her Edwarda a shake, but she did not wake up. Colleen also said that Edwarda was spitting up her food on Tuesday night, but that she seemed better by Wednesday morning.
Edwarda is survived by her sister, nephew Richard and great-nephew Joseph Michael.
"It is with great sadness I inform everyone my sister Edwarda is now with the Lord in Heaven," Collette said a statement on the family's website. "She then closed her eyes and joined my Mom in Heaven."
Before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kay, to never leave her side. Kay kept her promise and took care of her daughter until she herself died in 2008, the report added. Kay died in her sleep at the age of 80 in the room that she shared with Edwarda.
The mother and daughter story inspired author Dr. Wayne Dyer to write the book "A Promise Is A Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother's Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us."
The last words they exchanged were,''Promise you won't leave me, will you, Mommy?'' and ''Of course not, I would never leave you, darling, I promise. And a promise is a promise!''
Colleen took over watching her sister after their mother died.
The family spent a lot of money over the years for Edwarda's care and are struggling to pay for her burial, according to CBS. Those who can help are urged to contact Neighbors4Neighbors.org or call (305) 597-4404.
