Jennifer Morrison is really getting into the psychology of "Dark" Emma for season 5 of ABC's Once Upon a Time.

Will 'Once Upon a Time's Emma Pull Hook & Regina Back To The Dark Side?

Morrison and co-star Robert Carlyle (Rumple) recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about Emma succumbing to the dark side at the end of season 4 and when that will show itself in season 5.

Carlyle revealed that she does not automatically become "the Dark One" right off the bat.

Does 'Once Upon a Time's Regina 'Regret' Not Killing Her Sister Zelena?

"Episode 1, season 5, she is not the Dark One," Carlyle said. "Maybe she becomes that, but at this point, she's trying to get rid of it. She's trying to get rid of the dark magic at the moment."

Morrison noted that there is something "really fun and free" about Emma turning to darkness and no longer having to be such a strong, well-put-together person all the time.

The actress is approaching this new darkness from a deeper angle than you would expect.

"Instead of looking at this as, 'I'm trying to be mean, dark and evil,' it's about the absoluteness of her freedom from responsibility in the darkest way you can imagine," Morrison explained. "She's completely selfish and she's completely free of her responsibility. She is completely indulgent in her sensuality and her confidence and her demand for things in life. We're building her from that place. It's coming from a guttural, raw place in her that is almost like sociopathic in a way, someone just completely free of conscience."

Morrison has even dabbled in researching at the New York Public Library for inspiration from past fairy tales.

Her new wardrobe is helping too. "It is a whole different thing to have something a little bit more extravagant and to be painted white and all that stuff," she said.

Once Upon a Time season 5 premieres Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
