An insider told Page Six Wednesday that the series decided to cut back on Lucious Lyon’s scenes due to the problems that Howard is facing with his exes that includes a divorce and even accusations that he was physically abusive.

It seemed to work out perfectly considering Lucious is in jail in the beginning of the new season anyway.

“What they are doing is two-fold. They have him locked up so you won’t be seeing him in as many scenes. But they are bringing in so many, and I mean so many, guest stars and cameos that the average viewer won’t realize it because there’s so much going on.”

Some of the co-stars include Chris Rock, who plays one of Lucious’ fellow inmates and rapper Ludacris, who will portray one of the police officers. Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz are also some of the big names that will grace the Empire screen this season.

But Lucious isn’t the only character seeing a few changes this season. Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) will be an even more prominent character than before as Lucious is put on the back burner.

“She’s going to start dropping off from the flashback scenes and then they’re going to have her guns blazing,” the source said as they noted that Cookie will no longer be as humble as she was in the pilot season.

Fox has not confirmed the news of Howard’s transition.
