Ahmed Mohamed, a ninth-grader from Irving, Texas, was taken into custody on Monday after bringing what teachers thought to be a bomb to school. It turns out it was just a homemade clock he wanted to show off to his teachers. He was reported to the principal, who, along with police officers, took him away from class.
When Ahmed spoke with police officers, he insisted that it was just a clock but did not divulge other information.
5 Things That This Generation Will Be Known For
"We have no information that he claimed it was a bomb," said police spokesman James McLellan, according to The Dallas Morning News. "He kept maintaining it was a clock, but there was no broader explanation," adding, "It could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car. The concern was, what was this thing built for? Do we take him into custody?"
Ahmed is home now but he has been suspending from school for three days, according to his family.
Ahmed's father, Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, spoke of possible Islamophobia at work here.
"He just wants to invent good things for mankind," his father said. "But because his name is Mohamed and because of Sept. 11, I think my son got mistreated."
Since the story broke out, the hashtag #IStandWithAhmed has trended on Twitter. Read some of the more emotionally-charged responses:
