What does Ming-Na Wen think of Once Upon a Time's take on Mulan?

Is 'The Distinguished Gentleman' On 'Once Upon a Time' Actually Hades?

Wen, who voiced Mulan in the 1998 animated movie of the same name, was asked by ComicBook.com how she feels about the depiction of the character in Once Upon a Time.

Wen was careful to warn that their take on Mulan is not to be taken as gospel of what legendary warrior Fa Mulan was actually like.

"I think Once Upon a Time definitely takes incredibly liberties in creating their world, and their stories, and Mulan is one of those folklore that's out there for people to bend at their will," Wen explained. "If it serves their storyline, that's fine, but it certainly isn't the true fable, and the true folklore of who Fa Mulan was. That's just taking liberty, artistic license, and I'm fine - you know, that's what we all do."

Wen is currently starring as Agent Melinda May on fellow ABC show Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The actress alluded to the creative liberties Marvel takes, relating it to Once Upon a Time's.

"At Marvel, we try very hard to really stick with what the comic book fans love, but of course we have to tell stories week, after week, after week," she said. "Samuel Jackson playing Nick Fury is a good case. I think we do have to always take that into consideration that we are trying to create new stories and new ideas. I love those people at Once Upon a Time."

Mulan is played by Jamie Chung in Once Upon a Time.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
