The film, about a male assassin who is tricked into a gender reassignment surgery and then lives as a woman has had many up in arms. However, in an interview with TMZ, Rodriguez stands up for her work in the film, saying that despite the controversial storyline, the topic being a main focus in a feature film is progress for the transgender community.

She later went on to say that she felt the movie was helping progress the movement to give the trans community more rights than they've previously had, quoting Caitlyn Jenner's transition (though she got the name wrong) as another positive step for the community, and saying that she helped bring the issues for the community into the spotlight.

"I remember a day where white people were playing black people," she said. "It's about the evolution. Thank Chris Jenner for becoming who he became, and now you have a popular subject matter and I wanted to make a movie about it. Now everybody's on it."
