If Doctor Who eventually places a female Doctor in the TARDIS, it won't be because it's something the series will take lightly.

Fans have been campaigning for a female doctor for years now, but Doctor Who has yet to cave to pressure or online petitions. That doesn't mean writers like Mark Gatiss aren't itching for the chance to gender swap the iconic role.

"I think it will be wonderful to have a female Doctor, and there's absolutely no reason why not! But there is no vacancy at the moment," Gatiss informed fans on Tuesday. "I feel very strongly that it should be because the right person comes along though, not because there is pressure to tick a box. I have a list of potential female Doctors as long as my arm!"

The same can be said for the make up of the Doctor's companions, albeit in reverse. New Who has surfeit of female companions, and there are viewers who hope to see the BBC shake up that dynamic as well.

"Im a big fan of boy/girl combination companions, I think that dynamic works very well, but there's all sorts of things to explore!" Gatiss teased. "We've never had the Doctor only with a male companion, wouldn't that be interesting? Or a female Doctor with two girl companions (where is this going???)."

For now, fans can see the time traveling series move in a new direction with their first foray into found footage storytelling. Penned by Gatiss, "Sleep No More" will air this Saturday on the BBC and BBC America.
