Teen Posed as Medic For Over 4 Months; Arrested and Charged Trying to Treat Patient
Police arrested and charged an Australian teenager after the 17-year-old posed as a medical clinician for over four months, according to The Christian Post.
The teen posed as a medic in two Southern Australia hospitals for at least the past four months and tricked hospital employees who noted that he was well versed in medical terminology, reports said.
He was arrested late January and charged with administering a prescription drug, aggravated assault and identity theft after attempting to treat a 12-year-old hospital patient involved in a scooter accident. The boy's name was not revealed since he is considered a minor.
Officials reportedly knew the boy was posing as a professional from the start but could not arrest him because he had not actually attempted to directly interact with a hospital patient. He made rounds at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre, and also tried to provide medical aid to people he would see on the streets.
The teen was also spotted on the grounds of Flinders Medical Center wearing scrubs, a hospital lanyard and a stethoscope.
A memo was sent to both hospitals in December cautioning employees about the teen's routine, adding that he had not to date committed substantive offences, but should he make physical contact with a patient, posing as a clinician, this would constitute "criminal assault."
Authorities were only able to take action late January after the boy acted upon a hospital patient.
The boy's impersonation mirrors the role Leonardo DiCaprio played in 2002's Catch Me if You Can, a biographical film based on the life of professional con-artist Frank Abagnale, who at one point during his youth impersonated a hospital doctor for an extended period of time. Abagnale also pretended to be a pilot and forged checks throughout his life before he was caught and imprisoned.
