The X-Files revival is no place for romance.

'The X-Files' 2016: More Episodes In The Works? David Duchovny Teases Post-Revival Plans

Fans spent years waiting for Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) to get together, but 'shippers will have to bid farewell to the couple as the six-episode revival begins. So, what will ultimately drive the pair apart?

While the details remain hazy, the main reason for Mulder and Scully's split is that series creator Chris Carter simply didn't believe the couple would realistically make it this far into the future.

'X-Files' Return: Mythology To Get A Shake Up, New Conspiracy Theory Sends Mulder For A Loop

"I thought it was honest," Carter told TV Line. "And I thought it was an interesting thing to explore, as well as a way to put tension into the idea that the X-Files would be more difficult to reopen if they were split up versus together."

If Mulder and Scully were still an item, choosing to investigate the latest conspiracy could be decided over morning coffee. Now, according to promos, Mulder will start the case on his own.

Sadly, jumpstarting the partners' workplace dynamic will not rekindle their romance. Although tensions between Mulder and Scully will certainly thaw over the upcoming six episodes, Carter cautions that it will merely be due to a meeting of the minds.

However, it appears the former lovers will not harbor any ill will towards each other, at least not in so far as it will affect their work.

"We're not bickering while we're running with our guns out," Duchovny said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "I personally don't want to Mulder and Scully sitting in couples' therapy; that's not what the show is. You can find that on other shows."
