Who is Quantico's Simon Asher? A terrorist? A mastermind? Or simply someone whose fake plans got out of hand?

Those are the questions nagging fans during this long winter hiatus, and it's a quandary actor Tate Ellington is grappling with as well.

"He started as a Jewish accountant, gay FBI recruit. No I'm not sure what exactly he is," Ellington told WAPT News. "Everybody tries to figure out what he is (and) what he's up to."

The midseason finale was not kind to Simon. He nearly died thanks to Elias (Rick Cosnett), and once he thought he was in the free and clear, he accidently (or purposefully, who knows?) triggered a bomb that left the FBI's base of operations in shambles.

When the ABC drama returns on March 6, Simon's situation will be bleak.

"It's not looking so good for Simon, that's all I can say," series creator Josh Safran teased, according to Entertainment Weekly.

While the FBI picks up the pieces and attempts to figure out if Simon is yet another terrorist, Asher and Alex (Priyanka Chopra) will have to deal with the personal fallout from the series' latest explosion.

"More than anything, I think, Alex has to wrestle with the fact - and so does Simon - that while they believe the bomb in the basement of the hotel had been diffused, she's the one who told Simon that he could take his hands off that trigger, and they're both going to be dealing with that emotionally," Safran told The Wrap.

Quantico airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
