Well, we can safely say that we did not see that The 100 twist coming.

'The 100' Season 3: Want To See More Bryan & Miller? Jason Rothenberg Teases New Ship

The 100 just merged the Grounder and AI storylines in a staggeringly jaw-dropping moment that left fans both impressed and heartbroken. Lexa may be gone, but her death served to blast open the door to a whole new wonderful storyline. Plus, we're fairly certain you'll see her again.

If you're wondering why the Commander had to go, the answer is simple. Alycia-Debnam Carey is currently a regular on Fear the Walking Dead, and The 100 had to jump through flaming hoops to get her at all.

'Agents Of SHIELD' Season 3: 'Out-Of-This-World' Flash-Forward Promises Serious Trouble, Our Top 3 Theories

"I had to beg, borrow and steal to get AMC to allow us to use her for as many episodes as we did, and I knew I was going to lose the use of her after Episode 7," series creator Jason Rothenberg explained to TV Line.

As we said early, Lexa's death was not in vein. The Heda was playing host to ALIE #2, and now that she has slough off her mortal coil, Clarke and the rest of the Arkers are privy to the inner workings of the Grounders political/religious/technological secrets.

If you are confused as to how ALIE #2 works, Rothenberg is here to elucidate.

"Alie 2 - maybe we should have come up with another name for it - is the program's upgrade that's in the flame that only exists within a human host," The EP explained. "It needs a human to exist so that it understands what it means to be human."

Now that Lexa is dead, she will presumably live on within the flame in order to speak to new Commanders, just as she received messages from those who came before her.
