Christopher Abbott left HBO's series Girls after a run-in with series creator and star Lena Dunham.

He performed for 12 episodes of the show's first two seasons as Allison Williams' on-again off-again boyfriend, Charlie.

According to the New York Post, Abbott and Dunham started butting heads when the series once again entered production. The actor, known as the "cutest guy on the show" left because of creative differences.

In the most recent episode, Charlie landed a hot new job after selling a successful app, and William's character Marnie landing back in his arms with declarations of love.

"They've just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena," a source said, based on the report. "He didn't like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map."

"[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he's working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show," reps for Abbot told The Post.

Abbot's film career included last fall's indie favorite Hello I Must Be Going, where he starred opposite Melanie Lynskey; the SXSW film Burma; and the upcoming movie The Sleepwalker, which co-stars Brady Corbet.
