President Barack Obama apologized to California's Kamala Harris for saying that she was "the best-looking attorney general in the country."

According to White House spokesman Jay Carney, Obama called Harris on Thursday, hours after he made the comments at a fundraising in California, for the Democratic National Committee.

"They are old friends and good friends and he did not want in any way to diminish the attorney general's professional accomplishments and her capabilities," Carney said Friday at a briefing.

Obama's comments sparked an enthusiastic search for the Attorney General's pictures on the web.

“You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you’d want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake,” Obama said at the fundraising.

“She also happens to be, by far, the best looking attorney general in the country,” he added to laughs in the audience. "It's true! C'mon," he said.

Harris, 48 is the first Indian American attorney general in the country.

She is from Indian and Jamaican descent and has been attorney general in California since 2003.
