The decision to make Miley Cyrus a coach on the next season of The Voice has been a controversial one, but what does fellow coach Blake Shelton think of her inclusion?

Even a casual glance at The Voice Facebook page will show how Cyrus being a coach in this fall's edition of the singing competition is polarizing. At 23, she is by far the youngest Voice coach in its history and has become well known for her outrageous antics.

Yet, Shelton revealed in a new interview with Access Hollywood that Cyrus will be a necessary addition to The Voice.

"I think she'll probably work hard at this because she's definitely someone who thinks, obviously, thinks outside the box and so I know she's going to bring her own elements, as far as mentoring, into the show," the country star said. "I think The Voice needs it, I think we need her."

That doesn't mean he'll be rooting for her to succeed in the show, though. Shelton is arguably the most competitive coach on the show, jokingly admitting that he hopes all of his fellow coaches fail this season.

"God, I hope [Miley] sucks," Shelton said, laughing. "I hope she sucks, I hope Alicia [Keys] sucks and I know Adam [Levine] sucks ... But I have a feeling she probably won't."

Female coaches have traditionally had difficulties getting their artists to the finals, though Christina Aguilera did become the first female coach to win The Voice with this past season, winning with her artist Alisan Porter. Gwen Stefani only managed to get one artist to the finals in her two seasons, while none of Shakira's artists ever made the finals.

Meanwhile, Shelton's artists have traditionally done extremely well. Shelton has managed to get either one or two of his artists to the finals every season, with the exception of season 5. Four of his artists have won the show, while six have been runners-up.

The Voice returns for season 11 this fall on NBC.
