We still have a few months before we get another fix of Fox’s Empire. But we have a few spoiler alerts that fans can look forward to for season three this fall.

The show’s executive producer Ilene Chaiken spoke with TV Line recently and hinted at some of the biggest story lines that will play out in the upcoming new episodes.

As for Jamal Lyon (played by Jussie Smollett), he had just been released from the hospital after Freda Gatz accidentally shot him. In her defense, she was trying to kill Lucious Lyon after she found out he killed her father.

Chaiken revealed, “He’s clearly not recovered physically, and certainly not psychically.”

Still, Jamal is pretty adamant about not continuing the cycle their family has had of murder, crime and dysfunction. Remember when he refused to sing at Lucious and Anika Calhoun’s impromptu wedding in the finale? This time around he wants to bring his family with him.

“The question now is, can Jamal also bring his brothers and his mother along with him on this stance and say ‘This is no longer how we have to go about our lives and our business?’”

Interestingly enough, while Freda was in jail for the shooting, she’s not completely axed out of the show and will definitely be back for the new season.

“She’s part of our story. It’s not over. Jamal understands she’s a victim, but he still has to deal with the fact that she shot him. It was a hugely traumatizing event that she perpetrated on him. But he believes in her and in the mission of ending the cycle. So he’s going to have to do something about it.”
