Kathy Bates is slated to star in a new Netflix show, so does that mean the end is near for her American Horror Story run?

Netflix has ordered a new series called Disjointed that is set to star Bates as the lead role. The legendary actress will play a lifelong activist for marijuana legalization who opens up a dispensary in Los Angeles. The workplace comedy comes from sitcom producing legend Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory, Mom). Like Lorre's other sitcoms, it will be a multi-camera sitcom.

Considering this will probably keep Bates very busy, it puts her status on American Horror Story in question. The actress joined the show for season 3, Coven, for which she won an Emmy, and subsequently starred in Freak Show and Hotel. She is also expected to return for season 6 this fall. Assuming season 6 will be Bates' final season, she would be following a similar trajectory as Jessica Lange, who starred in the first four seasons of AHS before leaving for other career opportunities.

Meanwhile, very little has been revealed about season 6 of American Horror Story. Some cast members have confirmed their returns, like Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Matt Bomer, Finn Wittrock and Cheyenne Jackson, but showrunner Ryan Murphy has been very tight-lipped about anything regarding the season.

One interesting aspect of this season is that it will only have 10 episodes, a shorter run than usual, with seasons usually airing 12-13 episodes. AHS will also premiere in September for the first time; the show usually drops in the Halloween-friendly month of October.

As for the concept itself, there is still no indication of what's being planned. Some have guessed based on the new logo that combines a red no. 6 with a question mark that it will involve the devil or the antichrist, but nothing has been confirmed.

American Horror Story season 6 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
