With the calendar officially hitting September last week, life is going back to the normal routine for many, as kids head back to school, and perhaps also important to the routines, Fall shows are coming back to help us settle in and get comfortable with our favorite characters and storylines every night.

This year however, after a few where a lot of new TV felt pretty dismal (and most shows barely lasted a single season), some new series are showing some big promise as being not only worth carving out time from a nightly schedule to watch, but also worthy of binge-watching later on if they hit Netflix. Here are just five of the shows you should be making room for this Fall.

This Is Us (NBC)

When: Premieres Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10 p.m.

Starring: Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley

Why you should watch: This show broke records when the trailer premiered, and it's been buzzy for good reason. The show follows an ensemble cast of characters who's stories will all interconnect in one way or another, a formula that usually works better in movies, or solely as a sitcom on TV. However, this show will be a drama, and is already promising to be one of the biggest shows to hit TV in a while. If you miss this one, you are going to be the person who has nothing to talk about the next day at work.

Better Things (FX)

When: Premieres Thursday, Sept. 8 at 9 p.m.

Starring: Pamela Adlon

Why you should watch: Brought to viewers by Adlon and Louis C.K., it's clear this comedy is going to be a snarky one, and will have great references to current pop culture phenoms as well as other noteworthy events. It's also going to be something that probably any struggling parent or single mom will be able to relate to, since raising kids-especially teenagers-is hard.

Designated Survivor (ABC)

When: Premieres Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m.

Starring: Kiefer Sutherland

Why you should watch: We've all always wondered what would happen if the President has ever been forced to step down from office for any reason (something most of us have not experienced in our lifetime). More importantly, in a world now where we are constantly under threat of terrorist attacks, we're forced to wonder what would happen if the President-and pretty much every other member of the Line of Succession-- is wiped out. Now, we'll have out answer. Plus, there's the added bonus of having Kiefer Sutherland back on our TV's, and it's going to be a big reminder of how much he has been missed.

Frequency (The CW)

When: Premieres Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m.

Starring: Peyton List, Riley Smith, Mekhi Phifer

Why you should watch: The trailer almost makes the show seem like it's out of place with it's home on the CW, which is best known these days for shows like Arrow, SuperGirl, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin, which tend to be either action-packed, or super light and fun, but this is an intriguing, time-traveling sort of thriller, that is somehow part crime drama, part supernatural series, and part addicting story.

Bull (CBS)

When: Tuesday, Sept. 20 ay 9 p.m.

Starring: Michael Weatherly

Why you should watch: If you're bummed Weatherly left NCIS, you'll understand why when you watch this show, where he portrays a character who somehow always knows exactly what the jurors, attorneys, judges and accused are all thinking, even before they know it's going to pop into their heads. It's a quirky courtroom drama, which will fill a void that has been heavily ignored, or that's no longer there since both The Good Wife and Castle wrapped up last spring.
