The sixth season of FX's American Horror Story premiered Wednesday night, with fans finally learning about the spooky new concept.

When American Horror Story season 6 premiered last night, viewers discovered that the new theme would be centered on Roanoke, the place where an entire colony mysteriously disappeared during the Anglo-Spanish War. The season takes place in the present day, with Lily Rabe and Andre Holland playing Shelby and Matt, a couple who experienced a haunting in their home and telling the story on a documentary-style show. Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding, Jr. play their respective reenactors.

Adina Porter plays Lee, Matt's sister who comes to stay with them. Angela Bassett plays Lee in the reenactment. Throughout the first episode, Shelby, Matt and Lee encounter mysterious things happening throughout and surrounding the house, from falling teeth to a dead pig on their doorstep to a near drowning.

Many AHS fans were confused throughout the episode about what exactly was happening with the documentary interludes, the reenactments and some of what was happening in the actual story.

There was also some speculation that the season might feature a new story each episode, but this seems to not be the case as FX released a new promo for the season centered on Shelby, Matt and Lee and their various struggles. It looks like Kathy Bates will be playing the main antagonist, as her colonial-looking character is seen trying to seize the house.

What did you think of the season 6 premiere? Were you confused by it? Are you intrigued to see more?

American Horror Story season 6 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
