Lion Tacos Pulled: Taco Fusion Pulled Taco After Social Uproar
Taco Fusion took it a step too far for society when they began offering lion tacos.
The Tampa, Fla. restaurant was forced to take the offering off their menu following significant public outcry. The restaurant announced the removal on their website according to Fox 2 Now, but the post has since been removed.
"Some of you were supportive, some of you were angry. We listened to everyone and decided to no longer carry lion," read the post.
The $35 tacos were just one of the many exotic meat choices sold by Taco Fusion. Under the "Safari Taco" section of their menu are tacos filled with bison, shark, ostrich, alligator, gazelle, rattlesnake, Asian duck, and kangaroo.
"Our whole thought process of bringing the exotic meats to the Tampa Bay area was to give people the opportunity to try different things that they normally wouldn't get to try," said manager Brad Barnett, according to KPLC TV.
It appears there are just some things people don't think others should get the chance to try. Despite the fact that the restaurant says all their animals are free range and hormone free, no to mention legal, groups like Big Cat Rescue find the use of lion meant "appalling."
"I think we, as a society, have to define what we find morally and ethically acceptable," said Jeff Kremer of Big Cat Rescue, according to UPI.
However, according to Gawker, the pricy taco, whose meat came form a vendor in Illinois, sold out while it was offered.
"How is a cow that is injected with hormones, crammed in a dark pen it's whole life, and then unceremoniously slaughtered any better than a hormone free- free range animal that was raised for meat consumption," the restaurant asks in a blog post. "One is "majestic" and the other is overweight? One is a fierce predator, the other is a weak link? What exactly is the criteria for which animal has more importance?"
Well the restaurant has bowed to social pressure in this situation, it remains to be seen what dishes the company will serve up next.
