Shay Mitchell, star of the ABC TV series, Pretty Little Liars, says she no longer struggles with her weight but used to starve herself.

The actress is pictured on the cover of the June issue of Self magazine.

Mitchell admitted she used to starve herself while she lived in Hong Kong, where she worked as a model. Her "yo-yo" diet left her feeling tired and hungry. She said she learned to look at herself in a new light after she beat herself up about not being able to fit into her size 0 pair of jeans.

The Canadian-native no longer struggles with her weight and refuses to starve herself to reach a certain weight on the scale. "Being beautiful is not about being skinny, it's about being healthy," she said.

She keeps a steady diet of an egg-white omelet with spinach and mushrooms for breakfast; for lunch, a salad with chicken or fish; and for dinner, veggie soup. She lets herself satisfy her cravings with two of her favorite foods, potato chips and pizza, according to the interview she gave Self.

The 26-year-old found success as a model for a variety of companies abroad. She began modeling when she was 15 and worked in cities including Bangkok and Barcelona.

Mitchell returned to Toronto and studied acting.

In 2010, she was cast in the role of Emily Fields on Pretty Little Liars. The hit show is in its fourth season. It received 8 award nominations and won 13 awards. The wins include a 2013 Gracie Allen award, 2012 People's Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Drama and a in 2010, 2011 and 2012 People's Choice Award winner.

Mitchell is the national spokesperson for the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion collection and is an ambassador for the Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on combating the global sex trade.
